Thanks for the inside scoop on Google analytics for mobile websites, and the suggestions of more sophisticated platforms like mCommons, etc. Sorry, no source was cited for the conversion rate statistic. Looking forward to seeing your benchmark st...
Re. 3. Google Analytics is pretty useless for mobile sites. It uses Javascript for detection; the vast majority of mobile devices out there do not support Javascript. If you are going for mobile web analytics, be sure you choose one that uses a si...

Profile Information

Your interest in or involvement with technology and social change?
I have a longstanding interest in and passion for leveraging technology for the social good, primarily targeting low income and underserved communities. This includes community-based technology programs (see www.streettech.org), all the way up to global technology projects targeting the developing world. I have seen technology empower people in incredible ways, and want always to be in a position to make more technology-driven miracles possible. At the same time I am under no illusion that technology should be the focus of those miracles. It is and always will be about the people and how people make use of the technology.
What do you do in life as we know it?
I am a consultant, entrepreneur, writer, and nonprofit professional. I am also an avid traveler, reader, and networker. My philosophy is "Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like you do when nobody's watching."

Your killer idea to change the world?
I have tons, most of them bad, but today's killer idea is to give everybody in the whole world a dollar to spend on someone else and see how they would spend it...???
If today was your last day on earth, how would you live it?
I would gather all of my family and friends in a big room, tell them each how and why I love them, say goodbye and party like its 1999!!!

Then I would hanglide off of a cliff, never to be seen again...

We Need a "Building 43" for Poor Entrepreneurs

I recently came across Building 43, a new crowdsourcing site that purports to help small business folks learn how to leverage Web 2.0. It's a great watering hole for the technically inclined (and able) but once again presumes a certain level of literacy and technical expertise.

I know a number of new entrepreneurs from low income communities that could benefit tremendously from this type of assistance. And even learning to use tools like… Continue

Bridging the Religion-Technology Divide

As an avid promoter of technology for social change, and as an active participant in a community of faith, I have often wondered why the two worlds remain so segregated? Particularly when faith-based communities (meaning the full range of formal and informal religious communities) are am… Continue

Mobile Social Media is the Future

Here's a piece I wrote for ComputerWorld, on how social media is moving from our computer screens to the streets via handheld devices.

"Social media is literally on the move. While useful for anonymous and asynchronous communications, computer-based social media is rapidly becoming old school. In comparison, mobile social media is personal and dynamic -- and more closely tied to how peopl… Continue

Mobile Vs. Fixed Broadband

I got some interesting feedback from an OpEd I wrote for the San Jose Mercury News called "Mobile Technology, not broadband, is the way to connect America." From my mobile addict friends I got a lot of verbal hi-5s and no small number of text messages. From others, with a more nuanced or balanced view of mobile, I got some great pushback. Some, for example, pointed out that pricing for mobile (if you include phone and data plans) is st… Continue

The Cost of Investing in Mobile for Social Change

I attended a really interesting "Investing in Mobile" session at this week's Netsquared Conference in San Jose, California.

Here are some of the things I learned:

1) How much does it cost to develop an application for the iPhone? The cost can range from $10,000 to $100,000 depending on the type of App.
2) Should you start in mobile by developing a mobile website (.mobi) or begin… Continue

I am a student at the University of Washington and a researcher for
the World World Information Access Project. I found your blog over the
course of the research work we have been doing, and have read several of
your posts on ICTs and media.

We've just published a briefing booklet on some of our findings for the
year, and have posted it at:

www.wiareport.org

In particular there is a small write up on arrests of citizen bloggers we
made by analyzing all the news accounts of blogger arrests since 2003. We
found 64 cases in total and broke them down by year, country, and the kinds
of blog posts they were arrested for. We also did some research on ownership
diversity in Muslim media systems.

The University of Washington will be doing a formal news release about this
in a few days. Please refer to our website for more detailed report on our projects.

Please don't hesitate to contact me about the report, or the professor or
who helped direct the research: Phil Howard pnhoward@u.washington.edu.

Sincerely,

Hi Marilee! You can add an eyejot on your site if you cut and paste the code from the "Services" tab into Ning. Whatever eyejot you have recorded in your profile video will appear there. Unfortunately I can't recommend any PHP coders that work with ning, but you might want to try www.consultantcommons.org - part of Netsquared. If you have any more questions about Eyejot you might want to connect with David Geller here on CnC. He is one of the founders of Eyejot.

Best,

Paul

Hey Paul, I like the eyejot and would like to put it on my site (www.ahhah.org) which is also a ning site.

Couldn't find an easy way to do this when I went to their site. Can you give me instructions?

Also, do you happen to know any PHP coders that can work with Ning..I want to customize my pages and our techies are not PHP folks.
