Your interest in or involvement with technology and social change?
I have a longstanding interest in and passion for leveraging technology for the social good, primarily targeting low income and underserved communities. This includes community-based technology programs (see www.streettech.org), all the way up to global technology projects targeting the developing world. I have seen technology empower people in incredible ways, and want always to be in a position to make more technology-driven miracles possible. At the same time I am under no illusion that technology should be the focus of those miracles. It is and always will be about the people and how people make use of the technology.
What do you do in life as we know it?
I am a consultant, entrepreneur, writer, and nonprofit professional. I am also an avid traveler, reader, and networker. My philosophy is "Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like you do when nobody's watching."

Your killer idea to change the world?
I have tons, most of them bad, but today's killer idea is to give everybody in the whole world a dollar to spend on someone else and see how they would spend it...???
If today was your last day on earth, how would you live it?
I would gather all of my family and friends in a big room, tell them each how and why I love them, say goodbye and party like its 1999!!!

Then I would hanglide off of a cliff, never to be seen again...

Flickr For Good

Pictures can be a powerful medium, particularly for social benefit organizations that can better show what they do than talk about it. Think of the Smile Train, for example, which performs free operations to repair child facial deformities. (You have likely come across one of their ads in a newspaper or magazine that shows a child with a severe cleft lip). The pictures they show in their ads and on the website pretty much say it all. That… Continue

A $12 Computer?

Those MIT folks are at it again...this time pushing the idea of a $12 computer. Nope, not a $100 laptop, but a $12 rudimentary device based on the old Apple II technology that allows for simple typing etc. without all the bell and whistles (like today's more graphical user interface). Here's some more information on the project from the Boston Herald. And with Google… Continue

PayPal Discounts for Nonprofit Organizations, etc.

PayPal, the online payment processing system, now provides special discounts for nonprofits of up to 35% when using their system for online transactions. Check out the details here. Lots of good free and discounted tools for social benefit organizations out there these days, offered by major technology and Web 2.0 Vendors. Things like the YouTube Channel for nonprofits,… Continue

Gamers Support Universal Broadband

No surprise here, but gamers (or their lobbyists) support Universal Broadband. Last week the Enterainment Consumers Group, an advocacy group for gamers, signed on to support Connected Nation - a national program supporting universal access in the US. More information here. Broadband issues have received more attention lately as it was revealed that the US has sunk furthe… Continue

I am a student at the University of Washington and a researcher for
the World World Information Access Project. I found your blog over the
course of the research work we have been doing, and have read several of
your posts on ICTs and media.

We've just published a briefing booklet on some of our findings for the
year, and have posted it at:

www.wiareport.org

In particular there is a small write up on arrests of citizen bloggers we
made by analyzing all the news accounts of blogger arrests since 2003. We
found 64 cases in total and broke them down by year, country, and the kinds
of blog posts they were arrested for. We also did some research on ownership
diversity in Muslim media systems.

The University of Washington will be doing a formal news release about this
in a few days. Please refer to our website for more detailed report on our projects.

Please don't hesitate to contact me about the report, or the professor or
who helped direct the research: Phil Howard pnhoward@u.washington.edu.

Sincerely,

Rima Saha

Hi Marilee! You can add an eyejot on your site if you cut and paste the code from the "Services" tab into Ning. Whatever eyejot you have recorded in your profile video will appear there. Unfortunately I can't recommend any PHP coders that work with ning, but you might want to try www.consultantcommons.org - part of Netsquared. If you have any more questions about Eyejot you might want to connect with David Geller here on CnC. He is one of the founders of Eyejot.

Best,

Paul

Hey Paul, I like the eyejot and would like to put it on my site (www.ahhah.org) which is also a ning site.

Couldn't find an easy way to do this when I went to their site. Can you give me instructions?

Also, do you happen to know any PHP coders that can work with Ning..I want to customize my pages and our techies are not PHP folks.
